Step 1
First set up the activity by practising the language with the whole class. Start by demonstrating with a few children. Use the instruction:
Listen and answer.
Say:
Hello, I’m ….. What’s your name?
Make sure the child answers “I’m ...” And not “My name is ...”
Point to the next child to get the first child to ask his or her name and say:
Now ask him/her.
Hello, I’m ... What’s your name? Hello, I’m ... Goodbye.
While practising focus on getting the pronunciation right.
Step 2 (Optional)
The result of this activity is that children will be sitting at tables in groups of six.
Divide the number of children in your class by 6 (you may adjust this to suit your class size).
Make sets of paper slips. Each slip has a name on it. For example for a class of 30:
Six slips have: superman.
Six slips have: spiderman.
Six slips have: batman.
Six slips have: the monkey king.
Etc.
Mix the slips up and give them out to the children at random.
Will someone help me give out these slips?
Look at your slip. This is your name in this game.
The children have to move around the classroom and find six others with the same name as them. They do this by saying “Hello. What’s your name?” and answering “I’m ...”Do an example:
Meiling, let’s play the game. Hello. What’s your name?
Now you ask someone, Meiling.
Keep asking until you find five friends with the same name.
Can someone tell me what you have to do?
While they are doing it, put labels on each desk with one of the names from the paper slip. When the children have found the others in their group, tell them to sit down at the right table.
Have you found your friends with the same name? OK. Who is Superman? Put your hands up. Right. Please sit down at this table. What about Spiderman? Etc.
