Energy Resources

China is rich in various energy resources. Coal and petroleum, for instance, are two major ones. They are essential in developing the country's industry, science and technology. China has done a great deal in the past few decades to raise its output of coal and petroleum.

Three energy resources are being used up rapidly, With the building of four modernization, new industrial and science projects are springing up like bamboo shoots after rain. They are all big consumers of energy resources. Besides there has been considerable waste in the utilization of these resources.

To avoid an energy crisis in the future, the government must take certain measures. First, it should let people know the importance of saving energy. Second, efforts should be made to develop new energy resources, such as solar energy, geothermal(地热) energy and so on. We have reason to be optimistic in this respect.

Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the major problems of the modern world. A great deal of energy is needed to run the factories of modern industrial nations. Automobile, trains, planes and busses need energy, too. Nearly all of this energy is produced by burning fuels. The burning produces wastes, some of which remain in the air, causing air pollution.

Scientists are finding ways to stop air pollution especially in big industrial areas and densely-populated cities. They are studying new ways of generating electricity that may be less damaging to the environment. In the meantime, many power plants are being modernized to give off less polluted material. Also, engineers try to design and locate new power plants to do minimum damage to the environment.

However, it may be that we still have a long way to go before we have a "clean" world. Nearly all of the countries are trying hard to prevent and control air pollution. There indeed seems to be no end to tasks that environmentalists will be required to do. People will continually find new ways to control pollution.

Computer

The computer is widely used in all fields of society. Today, wherever you go, you will find computers being used. For example, computers are used in universities, large corporations, and small offices, etc. It has even entered the homes of ordinary people. As it is able to store and process a large amount of information, the computer bring about great convenience and high efficiency to people of all walks of life.

Computers can help people in different ways. For example, computer help scientists in analyzing data and doing complex calculation. For another example, computers are made use of by engineers in designing a plane, or a spaceship. Besides, computers may also play a great role in helping children with their lesson. Whatever you are doing, you many find computer a useful aid.

However, the computer must be designed and instructed by man. What is more, it is true that computers can make decisions, but they need detailed instructions and programs prepared by humans to operate. Therefore, the computer can never replace the human brain.

Opening-door Policy Makes China Strong

Modern Chinese history leads us to the conclusion that socialism, not capitalism is best for China. But how a socialist China should look at capitalism and more importantly, make use of the better side of capitalism for its own advantage is of vital(至关) importance to the country.

As far as our country's economic construction is concerned, taking advantage of the part of capitalism that is useful to us means we need to develop foreign trade, introduce advanced technology and better management, and make use of foreign funds. It also means we can absorb some of the economic theories, and make use of those economic policies, methods and measures that comply with(遵循) the law of mass production and a commodity economy.

By opening our windows wider to the outside world, people can learn more about other peoples and learn to make sensible judgments. Absorbing the better part of the cultures of other people to enrich ourselves is the best way to safeguard our socialist culture. So taking advantage of capitalism and stepping up economic reforms is the only way to make China strong. Closing the county to international exchanges will only keep it weak.

The Brain and the Computer

Some recent developments in the computer industry make scientists predict that the gap between human beings and machines will be closed about the year 20000.

To understand the significance of this prediction let us compare the human brain with existing computers. The brain consumes electrical energy at the rate of 25 watts and occupies a volume of one tenth of a cubic foot. The brain houses between 10 billion and 100 billion items of information. Every brain cell is directly connected to many other cells. As a result, the cells in which information is stored can communicate with thousands of other cells.

However, the computer consumes 1000,000 watts of electrical power and occupies hundreds of cubic feet of space. Its million items of immediately accessible information. In contrast, the computer memory is like a cell of pigeonholes, with no thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere.

In a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains.

Modernization of Family Life

With the rapid development of the society, family life is becoming modernized. Years ago, people considered owing radios, sewing machines, watches and bicycles as being modernized. But in recent years, almost all families have TV sets, refrigerators and washing machines. It is very common to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have telephones, computers and air-conditioners.

The modernization of family life brings us convenience and comfort. One may enjoy TV or radio programs, communicate with his friends through telephone or work with his computer while his washing machine, refrigerator and air-conditioners are running. And by car or motorcycle one can quickly reach wherever he wants to go.

In spite of this, these modern facilities also bring us disadvantages. For example, radiation from TV sets and computers is harmful to our health; improper driving of cars and motorcycles becomes the major cause of traffic accidents. The quietness of a family is often disturbed by a false dialing or unwelcome phone call. But it is believed that these disadvantages will be disposed of with the improvement of modernization and our life will be more healthy and more comfortable.

Competition

Competition makes people original and creative. It very necessary to compete if human society wants to advance. (Even animals compete for survival.) Without it, we would become lazy and nobody would rake any responsibility. When three monks live together, there will be no drinking water. This Chinese proverb vividly describes why China's productivity was so low before Mr Deng came to power. At that time, we had the so-called planned economy. There was no competition at all. So neither farmers nor workers worked hard. China was on the edge of collapse.

Competition can stimulate people to try their best to do anything. For example, in 100-meter race, each sportsman runs as quickly as possible, trying to win the champion. The same things happen in our society and in our daily life. If a company wants to surpass others, it must compete with them. It must raise its efficiency. All the companies doing this will no doubt benefit the whole society and the whole human race.

Being a student, I must compete with other students in our studies. I must study hard in all the fields so that I can be a useful man when I enter the society after graduation.

Students’ Part-time jobs

There are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. It enables him to be independent and builds up his self-confidence. Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society.

As everything has two sides, the disadvantages can’t be ignored. Part-time jobs cut into students’ study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca ‘t focus their attention on studying. In the end, the students may fall behind or fail in their studies.

In my opinion, students can choose to take up a job according to their own situation. The most important thing is for him to keep a good balance, put his study on top of the list and assign an adequate amount of time to it.

Ideals

Everyone has his ideals. A businessman wishes to make greater profit; a farmer expects bumper harvests; a student tries to learn more and better. And everyone strives, with more or less effort, to realize his ideal.

One should be sensible about whether his ideal is well founded or not. If it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. Effort, skill and persistence are all necessary. And very often, one has to get help from others, including advice and support in one form or another.

My ideal is to become a doctor, It is said that the field of medicine is a well-paid profession, but I take it as a lofty profession entrusted with saving people’s lives. To realize my ideal I have concentrated on laboratory work to develop the analytical skills necessary to become a qualified doctor. I am sure I will realize my ideal if I persevere in this pursuit.

Is Failure a Bad Thing?

Failure is what often happens. It is everywhere in our life. Students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and athletes may fail in competitions.

Although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. Some people don’t think their failure is a very important thing at all. So they pay no attention to it. As a result, they will have the same failure a period later. Some people think themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. Consequently, they spend their time and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.

Other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentioned above. Instead of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. After hard work, they will be successful in the end. It is said that failure is the mother of success. Success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawing lesson from our failures.

In my opinion, failure is not a bad thing, the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.

Sympathy

Sympathy is common to all human beings. We feel sympathetic for someone when justice cannot prevail for him. Even if he has committed a crime, most people still show grief for the consequences a man has to face as he may be deprived of social status and opportunity because of a mistake that seems trivial in appearance. Yet people are least sympathetic towards human beings also.

Most people show sympathy for other animals and plants falling victim to mankind's progress, seeing a distorted ladder leaning against the wrong wall. People do feel angry when they see droughts, earthquakes, political conflicts, or even massacres rupture humanity, but those are temporary problems that can be solved in a matter of time, whereas environmental problems may continue for decades and most people are truly sympathetic for the rights of countless living things they themselves are destroying.

Sympathy means a lot in our daily life. It motivates us to develop the capacity for helping the weak. But bear in mind that what the weak ones mostly crave is not emotional support, but realistic chances to stand on an equal level with their brothers to strive for a better future. Confucianism and other Chinese philosophies have adequate principles that can lead people to use sympathy in the best way. Sympathy plays an important role in improving the world.

Save the Endangered Animals

Scientists have estimated that over 40,000 different kinds of animals are going to be extinct in the next few years. Why will they be extinct? The reasons are as follows:

Natural Factors. Second, artificial reasons are the most important. Those who kill and eat wild and precious animals, like tigers, lions, elephants and rhinoceroses, make a lot of money by selling the animals' skin, horns and even guts. How cruel they are Take tigers for example, they're disappearing.

Humankind destroys their habitat. In the last century, the world's population of tigers has dropped by 95 percent. However, the whole world eventually wakes up and starts trying their best to give the rare animals a better environment. They make a lot of strong laws to protect animals form being harmed and punish those selfish guys who hurt these valuable animals.

But that's not enough. We not only have to protect those endangered species, but also have to refuse to eat and buy them. Maybe those animals will be able to survive in the future.

Learning Through My Idol

Everyone has his or her own idol. Some offer negative stand with the latter. My idol is a Hollywood movie star --- Sandra bullock. I've admired her for two and a half years. I think she has an incredible magical power. She's the best actress in my heart. Actually I am deeply influenced by her. About two years ago. I rented a video called "speed," starring Sandra.

At that time, I still didn't know who she was. Because of the leading man (Keanu Reeves). But after seeing that great movie, I was totally starstruck! Her performance and smile really attracted me. At that time, I started collecting everything about Sandra from magazines, TV and newspapers. But unfortunately, I couldn't find much information in Taiwan. That really disappointed me. All I could do was to get on the internet. Luckily, there were many foreign web sites. I was really happy then. But there was a big problem for me: the Web sites were all in English. So, English became an important part in my life. I was determined to learn English well and to be able to read and understand everything.

The craziest thing I've ever done was to record all her movies, film previews and interviews. I listened to them over and over every single day. When I heard any vocabulary which I didn't understand, I would look up them in the dictionary. That was a good for me because I could learn them in a very short time. It does work, and I never get tired of doing this. It's been two years since then, and my listening and reading abilities are better than before. I can even chat with my foreign friends on the internet. Now, just wasn't to say, "Thank you so much, Sandra." Finally, if you guys have an idol like me, I hope you all can get something positive from that person.

A Success

It's my school's tradition for sophomores to take part in an English Play Contest each year. Most classes are eager to participate, and my class is no exception. Frankly speaking, we've been preparing since the 10th grade, so we've already had experience acting. At first, I was afraid I would ruin my image and that my fellow students would make fun of me in my funny costume. Well runs an old saying, "You never know until you try." After the first rehearsal, I realized that my own character couldn't be better because I could entertain the audience and have fun at the same time!

We made use of the spring break to practice a lot. At the beginning, all of us felt clumsy and were unable to be ourselves. Then, we worked hard and rehearsed over and over! Though it was exhausting, we all thought it would be worth it. All of us were certain that we would take first place in the contest.

The date for the competition eventually arrived; we were all set for the big moment. Though I was very tense, I was glad I was able to show all the hard work I'd put into my role in the end. My class was the third to perform. We won the contest! Our tram had achieved the goal. I realized that cooperation truly plays a vital part in teamwork. This experience has taught me how to get on well with others in a group, and above all, how to face a large crowd without any fear!

Beautiful Taiwan

Start your trip through Taiwan by going to Taipei and visit the National Palace Museum. The Chinese culture there will surprise you Visiting Taiwan is a lot of fun. Even at night, you can see many interesting things in night markets.

In Tamsui, you can watch the beautiful sunsets. There are many beaches. In Taichung, you can eat various delicacies like delicious suncakes and you can go and visit Sun Moon Lake. Rowing boats on the lake is very relaxing. Then go to Jade Mountain. It's almost 4000 meters high, so don't forget to take extra clothes to keep warm when you go mountain climbing.

The next place is the east coast. You'll enjoy driving or walking through beautiful Taroko Gorge. After visiting the gorge, many people like to go white-water rafting in sunny Hualien! Now how about the southern part? Driving from Hualien to Tainan is beautiful.

Taiwan is good because its historical places are famous. In Kaohsiung, you can see a lot of ships. And you'll love lying on the beach and eating seafood in Kenting. So don't forget to tell your friends about beautiful Taiwan.

Television

The creation of television was regarded as a scientific miracle. From then on, it has played a vital role in our daily lives. We benefit a lot from it. First and foremost, television enables us to keep in touch with what is happening throughout the world. TV news informs us of the latest would affairs. Moreover, it brings us joy and pleasure and adds brilliant colors to our life. Were it not for television, we wouldn't live in such a highly developed society.

Nowadays, television also gives rise to many new problems. For example, there are now many violent programs on TV and a great number of children copy these actions. In addition, it is bad for children to spend a lot of time sitting in front of the screen. This is the reason why all children wear glasses today. Last but not least, I'm convinced that everyone should make use of their intelligence to do something creative.

Unfortunately, many people simply indulge in watching TV.
I'm of the opinion that it is not easy to tell whether television programs are good or bad. We should be selective of what we watch, I'm convinced that every individual can led a meaningful life with the company of the television.

Education

The information explosion and education not only broadened people's horizons, but also enriched their lies. The government is taking definite steps to reform the education system, but this has also raised a lot of questions. Many people receive higher education, but they don't comprehend the true meaning of education.

With increasing numbers of violent incidents occurring in schools and criminal gangs posing a threat to campus life, we need to address these immediate problems as we improve our educational system. Education enables our country gain a foothold in the world, and no country can afford to neglect education. It develops the character and mentality of its people.

The government has offered free and compulsory education to help enable our citizens to keep up with times. And yet, there is no denying the fact that schools are still focused on passing exams, so analytical thinking and practical applications get little or no emphasis.

Education needs to be livened up and not just focus on simply passing exams and getting good grades. Our authorities should be concerned with making clear plans to reform and achieve these goals in future.

The Importance of Love

Love makes the world go around. Without love, we will treat each other coldly. Nowadays, many people are selfish and care only about their own families. This is only one kind of love and is not true love.

Love is more than emotions between men and women. Love is a great power. It makes the world seem smaller and it makes people become closer together. Why do people fight with each other? Don't they love the people they are quarreling with? They do, but they don't know how to be thoughtful or how to express their love. For example, when an old man crosses a road, you can help him by supporting him with your arm.

It is a simple action, but the old man will appreciate this. Without love, families will quarrel. Without love, friends will not be friendly. Without love societies will not be peaceful, so love is a very important part of the world.

Fashions and Me

Due to the abundance of the material goods and rapid development of civilization, people are becoming more and more particular about what they use and wear. An increasing number of manufacturers have focused on designing things that will appeal to consumers. Those who sell a lot of their products dominate the market and lead a trend that most people will follow right away. If their products do not improve, they are doomed to fade away.

Why are so many people addicted to fashionable things? I think it's because they are fond of showing off . They want to dress themselves in amazing costumes and perform unique actions to draw others' attention. Actually, many people only buy certain trademarks without making sure that the product aren't fakes. This situation allows the market to be flooded with pirated copies. It can't do any good but increase piracy, cause unexpected losses to original companies and harms our international image. Moreover, following some trends can be dangerous.

In my opinion, as teenagers, we should acquire knowledge and do something significant for our society, and not just be snobbish pursuers of fashions.
